The Outline to a Strong Grant Proposal
Outline for Preliminary Proposal (Narrative Format)
Project Title:
Educator/Project Oversight person:
Institutional Affiliation:
Address and Phone Number:
Project Goal: (Brief description of what your class-program does and what this proposal
is designed to accomplish)
Funding: (List of specific requests and costs for each category below)
Equipment: (Hardware: TEC GCC LaserPro Laser, ZCorp 3D Printer)
(Software: KeyCreator V9, Envisioneer V6) Supplies: KeyCreator Cookbook
Time Line: (Proposed starting date, dates of specific events and completion)
Means of Evaluation:
Measurable Objectives (Means of Evaluation) Grant proposals normally include statements of "Means of Evaluation" or similar, to
provide the funding source with an evaluation criteria. You strengthen your proposal
when you articulate measurements of what will be accomplished, to what extent, and
by what date. Examples:
"Through the building and use of the RapmanUSA 3D-Printer Kit, Students will, by the
end of the semester, not only gain critical STEM-skills in the following - Mechanical
Engineering, Robotics, Basic Electronics, Applied Mathematics, Systems-Assembly,
Mechatronics, CAD Design, and Process Analysis - but also advanced knowledge-sets
in modern Industrial Manufacturing and Rapid-Prototyping."
"By the completion of this program using Envisioneer 3D-Architecture, Interior Design,
and Landscaping software, Students will have both a broad and granular understanding
of the same skills and knowledge-sets used by professional architects and builders."
Suggested Narratives for Proposals
Below are possible narratives containing points you may want to use in your proposal.
We suggest you paraphrase the appropriate sections to fit your own program.
"The National Science Board released a report in 2008 called Science and Engineering
Indicators and it stated that the primary learning style is now ‘hands-on’. Having a
'hands-on' multi-disciplinary STEM-teaching-tool like the RapManUSA delivers a wide
gamut of critical skills using hands-on methods."
"Engineering is the engine that drives human civilization, and today’s students are the
ones who will power that engine. With that in-mind, it's crucial to support that 3D
engineering instruction by delivering professional 3D CAD/Manufacturing software such
as KeyCreator (used by companies like Boeing and Nike) to students to ensure they
have the requisite skills to pursue an engineering career, and, at the same time,
elevate the perception that our School is at the forefront of quality, modern education."
Funding Decisions are Often Personal
A lot of funding decisions are made informally; often before the actual written proposal
is submitted. Decision-makers are persuaded to approve projects based on a
relationship of trust and confidence as much as by a well-crafted proposal.
The lesson here: Get to know your funding source. If you are dealing with State
individuals or people you don't know, gain the support of people you do know: such as
principals, superintendents, curriculum supervisors, etc, who can intercede for you.
