Lyndon Institute Captures Norwich University Bridge Building Title Using CADKEY® and DataCAD®

Pembroke, NH (May 20, 2003) - Tech Ed Concepts, Inc., the North American Academic Distributor of CADKEY and DataCAD software, is proud to announce Lyndon Institute (VT) as the Overall Winner of the 9th Annual Norwich University Bridge Building Competition.

Each year, high schools throughout the state of Vermont are invited to compete in this Popsicle® Stick Bridge Building Competition. The competition is sponsored by the Civil Engineering Department at Norwich University and draws teams of high school students throughout the state of Vermont to test their civil engineering skills. Seven teams competed for several winning categories including First Place Overall, Second Place Overall, Maximum Strength, Originality, Workmanship, Most Spectacular Failure and Resistance Factor (RF). Several design constraints are enforced, including minimum and maximum weights, lengths, and other restrictions. The Overall Winner is chosen based on the rankings in each of the categories.

The students create and build their bridges in class, using only Popsicle sticks, toothpicks, dental floss and glue for construction materials. The bridges are designed using Computer-Aided Design software programs (Lyndon Institute chooses CADKEY and DataCAD). On the day of the contest, each bridge is carefully examined to ensure that the competition design requirements have been met. A sophisticated testing apparatus is then used for stress analysis, and to determine the ultimate strength of the bridge.

With the help of CADKEY and DataCAD software, Lyndon Institute received six trophies including first place overall. Lyndon Institute Drafting Instructor, Hugh Schultz stated, “My students have outdone themselves this year, the best ever, and they owe it all to proper preparation. They used CADKEY and DataCAD to design and develop their bridges. Even though Norwich changed the specifications in the middle of their design process, the revisions went smoothly because of the diversity of the software.”

Lyndon Institute is a highly regarded private school which serves grades nine through twelve in Vermont. The school offers world-class programs in arts, sciences, technology and athletics, and enrolls students from nearby towns as well as others from across the United States and around the world.
