CADKEY® and DataCAD® Assist Lyndon Institute Students to Win 8th Annual Norwich University Bridge Building Competition

Lyndon Institute Wins First Place Overall Using Leading Industry Computer-Aided Design Software

Northfield, VT - April 9, 2002 - Tech Ed Concepts, Inc., the North American Academic Distributor of CADKEY and DataCAD software, is proud to announce Lyndon Institute (VT) as the Overall Winner of the 8th Annual Norwich University Bridge Building Competition.

Each year, high schools throughout the state of Vermont are invited to compete in this Popsicle® Stick Bridge Building Competition. The competition is sponsored by the Civil Engineering Department at Norwich University and draws teams of high school students throughout the state of Vermont to test their civil engineering skills. 50 teams competed for five winning categories including Maximum Strength, Originality, Workmanship, Most Spectacular Failure and Resistance Factor (RF). Several design constraints are enforced, including minimum and maximum weights, lengths, and other restrictions. The Overall Winner is chosen based on the rankings in each of the five categories.

The students create and build their bridges in class, using only Popsicle sticks, toothpicks, dental floss and glue for construction materials. The bridges are designed using Computer-Aided Design software programs (Lyndon Institute chooses CADKEY and DataCAD). On the day of the contest, each bridge is carefully examined to ensure that the competition design requirements have been met. A sophisticated testing apparatus is then used for stress analysis, and to determine the ultimate strength of the bridge.

Lyndon Institute Chooses CADKEY & DataCAD
Lyndon Institute use CADKEY and DataCAD as their Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) systems of choice in the mechanical drafting and architectural drafting programs.

They achieved success in the following categories: First Place and Third Place in Workmanship, First Place and Third Place in Originality, Second Place Maximum Strength and Most Spectacular Failure. Each competing team consisted of one to three students, representing grades ten through twelve. Sixteen teams from Lyndon Institute were represented at the competition.

Heidi Answorth, Allison Mishnell and Nicky Vendituli represented Lyndon Institute as the Winners of the First Place Overall team and were awarded with CADKEY and DataCAD software, plaques and scientific calculators for their achievement.

Lyndon Institute Drafting Instructor, Hugh Schultz said, "This is the best we have ever done! This is the first time we have ever placed first overall! We started using CADKEY and DataCAD in 1997, and we have just increased our performance every year since then."
