Lyndon Institute Shines in Bridge
Building Competition with
CADKEY® and DataCAD®
Pembroke,
NH - May 30, 2001 - Tech Ed Concepts, Inc., a full-service 3D design
and manufacturing technology provider for educators and students,
announced today the results of the Norwich University 2001 High
School Bridge Building Competition. This event was open to all high
schools in the state of Vermont. Forty-one teams vied for 13 trophies
this year, with Lyndon Institute (Lyndon Center, VT) capturing seven
of these awards. Lyndon Institute used CADKEY and DataCAD as their
Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) systems of choice.
Each year, high schools throughout
the state of Vermont are invited to compete in this Popsicle® Stick
Bridge Building Competition. Several design constraints are enforced,
including minimum and maximum weights, lengths, and other restrictions.
The bridges are designed using CAD software such as CADKEY and DataCAD.
Students then build the bridges ahead of time, typically in class,
using only popsicle sticks, toothpicks, dental floss and glue for
construction materials. On the day of the contest, each bridge is
carefully examined to ensure that the competition design requirements
have been met. A sophisticated testing apparatus is then used for
stress analysis, and to determine the ultimate strength of the bridge.
Prizes were awarded in several different classifications,
and Lyndon Institute, with the help of CADKEY and DataCAD software,
took seven of the 13 trophies. They achieved success in the following
categories: Second and Third Place Overall, Most Spectacular Failure,
Second and Third Place in Resistance Factor, Second Place in Originality,
and Third Place in Workmanship. Each competing team consisted of
one to three students, in grades ten through twelve. All of Lyndon's
participants were involved in drafting classes at the school..
Lyndon Institute is a highly regarded private school
which serves grades nine through twelve in a Vermont village setting.
The school offers world-class programs in arts, sciences, technology
and athletics, and enrolls students from nearby towns as well as
others from across the United States and around the world. According
to Mr. Hugh Schultz, Lyndon Institute drafting instructor, Lyndon
has found this program to be so beneficial that they intend to develop
their own competition, following the same guidelines and procedures
set forth by Norwich University. Lyndon's competition will be open
to all seventh and eighth graders of schools who send students to
Lyndon Institute. The expectation is that such a competition offered
to lower grades will help foster excitement about technology and
it's many possibilities at a younger age.
