Student Takes 1st Place Using DataCAD

Concord, NH, March 27, 2006– Blake Thomas, a drafting student at Unicoi High School, in Erwin Tennessee, received a 1st place award at the SkillsUSA Regional Competitions. He was using DataCAD, a professional CADD program for architectural design. Developed by architects and software engineers, DataCAD includes tools that make design and drafting easier. This software is listed as the second most-widely used by registered architects, which is why educators are finding it a very valuable tool in the classroom.

SkillsUSA is a national organization serving over a quarter-million high school and college students and professional members who are enrolled in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations. Each year, students compete first at the state level and then the winners continue on to the SkillsUSA National Competition in Kansas City, MO. Russell Edwards is Blake’s CAD instructor. He states, “The drafting competition had 10 contestants from surrounding high schools. Students were instructed to create a floor plan, elevation and wall section. They were graded on 3D modeling, 2D drafting, dimensioning and overall presentation.”
